The Philippines Department of Migrant Workers has issued a strong advisory urging principals and manning agents to divert vessels carrying Filipino crew away from high-risk areas, particularly the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This measure comes amid escalating tensions and threats to maritime safety in the region. The Department has made it clear that failure to comply with this directive may lead to serious consequences, including the suspension or cancellation of licenses under existing regulations.

This development carries significant implications for the marine insurance sector. Underwriters and insurers may be compelled to reassess risk exposure and coverage terms for vessels operating in or near these zones, especially those with Filipino seafarers onboard. Premiums for War Risk and Kidnap & Ransom (K&R) insurance could increase, and coverage conditions may become more stringent. Additionally, failure to adhere to government advisories might affect claims, as insurers could deem non-compliant routing as contributory negligence, potentially limiting indemnity.
